Annual New Year’s Day race draws hard-core runners by the hundreds

SALEM — With the windchill factor, Doug Bollen estimates the temperature at the starting line last New Year’s morning was around 15 degrees — below zero.

“It was brutally cold with the wind whipping around Dead Horse Beach,” recalled the city’s parks and recreation director.

Yet, more than 300 runners from all over the North Shore marked the 10th hour of 2009 by testing the boundaries of their sanity and competing in the Frosty Four, a frigid four-mile road race through Salem.

Not even bone-chilling temperatures or sacred holidays can disrupt Salem’s running rituals.

This is a city with a year-round road-race calendar and a running club of nearly 300 members who are such hard-core devotees to the sport that many of them met up Christmas morning at 8 a.m. just to fulfill their weekly Saturday group run.

A record field of more than 1,500 runners took part in the Wild Turkey run on Thanksgiving Day. Already, nearly 400 people have registered for the 2011 edition of the Frosty Four on Jan. 1.

“This is the biggest boom I’ve ever seen,” Bollen said. “More and more people are taking part in running. … I think it’s a great thing, and cities and towns have embraced it.”

But none on the North Shore has tapped that enthusiasm quite like Salem.

Wicked Grand Prix Race Series Updated

The 2010 Wicked Grand Prix Race Series ended with the conclusion of the Wild Turkey 5 Mile Run in Salem back on Thanksgiving. This year there were 103 runners that completed the Wild Turkey 5 Mile Run from the Wicked Running Club, which is amazing.

It was a brutal year for the Wicked Grand Prix Race Series though, with only 14 Wicked Runners actually finishing the series! There is talk of a revamp of the series for 2011 with a team approach to get more Wicked Runners involved. Stay tuned for the details!

Our stat man, Dan Barrett has compiled all the data and you can now find out how you and your fellow Wicked buddies did during the Wild Turkey 5 Mile race as well as the final standings of the Wicked Grand Prix Series.

Congrats to the 14 Wicked Runners who finished completed the series!

Thank you to Dan Barrett and T.R. Ramsdell on organizing this years Grand Prix series. Lots of hard work went into not only selecting the races but informing Wicked Runners of the series and keep the Grand Prix page up to date for everyone in Wicked.

The Results Are In!

The election for the 2011 Wicked Running Club Board of Directors has come to an end and the results are in! Our mascot, Miles Fartlek got one write in vote for President, but it seems like his campaign was not strong enough to take the top spot. Nice try Miles!

Congratulations to the members of the Wicked Running Club who were elected! They will be filling some very important roles next year as they continue to improve the club for all members and promote Wicked around the North Shore and beyond. Go Wicked!

Wicked Has A Great Day @ 27th Annual Mill Cities Relay

The 27th Annual Mill Cities Relay started on a chilly Sunday morning, but that didn’t stop the 9 teams from the Wicked Running Club who took to the streets of the Merrimack Valley to start the journey from the Nashua YMCA through Tynsboro, Lowell, Methuen and finally Lawrence.  Wicked had an outstanding day as 6 out of the 9 teams that were entered scored points, which put WRC in 8th place overall in the club standings. Those 6 teams scored 47 points, our best showing in our very short history of participating in this invitational only relay. Great job everyone! GO WICKED!
