49th Annual Mount Washington Road Race

main-title1

Road racing on Fathers Day Weekend in New England  started off with one of the most popular mountain races around, the Mount Washington Road Race. While there might only be one hill during this race, it’s the longest and most challenging hill any runner will probably ever face. The race is 7.6 miles and has runners traveling along the Auto Road. Now that may seem like a an easy race, but with an average grade of 11.5 %, with other sections being 18% and the final 50 yards a astonishing 22%, this is no piece of cake race. Oh, and did I mention that the only way to get into this race in the first place is through a lottery system?

With the challenge laid out before them Bill Morse, Steph Cooper, Shari Hewson, and Ken Hewson, battled the only hill that the race had and below are the results from the race. Congratulations to all of them on a great race! Way to represent Wicked!!

  • Great job everyone! Can’t wait for next year!

  • Congratulations to Shari and Ken Hewson for their first, highly successful “race to the clouds”, although this year the weather provided them with a rare treat of running ABOVE the clouds after mile six. Shari was “all smiles” as she attacked that last 22% grade and the finish line. Ken was close behind Shari, showing some “Wicked” mettle by fighting every tough aspect of this arduous climb.

Steph Cooper showed her usual love of every running experience by “flying” up the mountain with a very fast time and then looking like she just jogged an easy 5K. Nice job Steph completing your 2nd Mt. Washington Road Race, and hence a total of 15.2 miles up “the mountain”. May there be many more!!

It was a fun weekend! Looking foward to a larger Wicked presence for next year’s 50th running up the “Rock Pile”.
