A Wicked Hot Day In Marblehead

A group of Wicked Runners take a break from the heat to pose for the camera.

With temperatures that would rival the type of heat one would expect during Yankee Homecoming 5k/10mile races, the 2009 edition of the Ring Around The Neck 5 mile road race was a hot one for sure. For some unlucky runners, the heat wasn’t the only issue. Soon after the start of the race, the lead pack took a wrong turn after what looked like a Police motorcycle blocking the street indicating a left hand turn was to be made. This was not the case. Once the runners were back on course, it was a challenge to stay cool. Multiple water stops were available to runners along the course, and a group a kids with water guns also provided some relief.

Wicked was well represented during the race, with 25+ members showing up to battle the rolling hills of Marblehead. Wicked also had some outstanding performances despite the heat. Annie Rose Willis was the first overall female with a time of 35:13, while Dave long had a strong showing and was the second overall male in a time of 30:59. Age Group winners are as follows; Male 19-29 Tim Short 1st 32:30, Male 30-39 Matt Adams 3rd 35:51, Female 30-39 Gail M. Gordon 3rd 38:36, Male 40-49 Dan J. Barrett 3rd 35:30 (First Age Group Award!!!), and Female 40-49 Mellisa Shea 3rd 39:56.

Doug Bollen and Beth O’Grady also made the race as Wicked’s personal cheering section! Thanks guys! To view pictures from the race click here.

  • Is Matthew Adams from your Group? I found him not feeling too good and called for medical assistance. I do believe he was taken by an ambulance. I also know he was one of the winners in his age category.

If he is from your club, please let me knwow if he is doing okay.

    Many thanks

  • Hi, Thanks so much for your help Lizete. Those oranges were great.

I did end up taking the ambulance ride to Salem Hospital. Once I was in the “cool” ambulance with an ice pack, I was feeling so much better. Got a couple liters of fluid at the hospital and was feeling 100%.

I will have to come up with a better plan for future runs in the heat. Thought the 3 cups of juice and water I had beforehand were going to be enough, but that heat took it right out of me.

Thanks again for all your help.
    Matt
