Check out this gnarly group of Wicked runners! Lots of fun was had last night at the Woods. For some it was a good chance to get a final hill work out in before heading up to NH to run the Mt. Washington Road Race. For others, running Lynn Woods is just way to much fun! But if you don’t believe me, come by next Wednesday at 6:30pm. More pictures are available in the Wicked Picutres section of the site.

I know many of our members have athletic interests beyond running: biking, swimming, snowshoeing, etc., but ROLLER DERBY???? I could be wrong, but that certainly looks a lot like our Karen Giroux plastered on telephone poles throughout downtown Salem advertising women’s Roller Derby. And, check out the name, Wicked Pissahs. It seems to all fit. It’s hard to tell, though, with that snarl on her face; Karen always has a smile, but, I don’t know…… P.S. I hear that Jay Curry actually went to this event last week.
The “Front Street Crowd” posing for a picture before this morning’s run. With the exception of Billy Prentiss, everyone looks pretty wide awake and happy to be there. Welcome first timers: Patrick Smith and Brett (not sure of last name).
bottom, left to right: Tim Clarke, Chip Bott, Patrick Smith, Brett, and Stephanie Cooper
top, left to right: Paula Novelli, Dan Leadvaro (Whawoo!), Billy Prentiss (Grumpy), Dan Cooper, Rachel Hunt, Karen Giroux, Steve Touchette, and Deb (Sarge) Touchette.
The lightening and rain held off and we had a great Slow Run Monday. The pace was pleasant at 10 to 12 min/mi and we ran from 3 to 4.5 miles. A really nice group of runners!
This week the runners were:
Belinda Pattison
John Mahoney
Tricia Pini
Shari Hewson
Joe Ferlazzo (Plans to join the 5:30 AM group this Thu.)
Kathey Moskal (Joined Wicked Running tonight!)
This was a first time Mon Run for Shari and Tricia and only the second time for Kathey. These three got to talking and soon realized that they would all be running in the Louise Rosetti Race on Wed. Hope you all have a great race! All you Wicked Runners that have not yet meet these people, this will be a good time to say hello!
Looking forward to running next Monday. You should join us. If you want more info, contact john@wickedrunningclub.com
Well, Patrick Smith (on right) was certainly busy this weekend. On Friday night, he ran in the Winthrop Seaside Striders 5K Foot Race and came in 21st (out of 208) in a time of 21:29 (6:55 pace). Patrick reports that the race actually was 3.25 miles due to the lead car taking a wrong turn. Patrick didn’t wait around for the results because it was home to bed to prepare for a 3:15 AM wake up call for the Brewery (Boston) to Brewery (Windsor, VT) 146 mile bike ride on Saturday. He and his wife, Denise Murphy, completed the ride in 8:55:00 (16.4 mph). According to Patrick, “There were a ton of hills, but we had a good time.” I’m sure you had a good time, but, man, that’s a lot of energy output. I bet those beers tasted good. Fantastic job! Congratulations.
Fathers’ Day turned out to be rather wet and dreary; however, the weather did not deter several Wicked runners from traveling to Rockport to run in the 5K and 10K races. Rich Tomlins, Tim Short, Billy Prentiss, Doug Bollen, Beth O’Grady, and Kerry Gertz all performed well. Tim came in second overall in the 10K and Beth O’Grady was second in her age group in the 10K. Kerry Gertz finsihed 41st in the 10K, not bad given the tough hills and the heavy rain. Billy Prentiss finished 2nd in his age group in the 5K, Rich came in 5th overall in the 5K, and Doug was 40th out of a field of 108 in the 5K. You can check out the results at http://www.coolrunning.com/results/08/ma/Jun15_7thAnn_set4.shtml. Tim Short has run this race two years in a row now and gives it “about a C+.” It is expensive. $30 the day of the race. The amenities are pretty basic, and Tim feels they would get a bigger draw if they offered more. Now, nothing can compare to our Frosty Four for amenities! Good job, everybody.
Earlier in the week on Wednesday night, we had runners (and bikers) competing in the Lynn Woods 2.5 mile and 5.5 mile trail runs, and also in the duathlon (2.5 mile run, 5.5 mile bike, 2.5 mile run). Congratulations to Jay Curry for finishing 2nd and Dan Cooper for finishing 4th in the duathlon (out of 17). Wicked runners chose the longer of the two trail races with Liz Touchette, Steve Touchette, Deb Touchette, Doug Bollen, Chip Bott, Beth O’Grady, Karen Giroux, and Steph Cooper tramping through the Woods. Check out the results at www.lwrun.org/.
Wicked Tidbits:
Who has run the Danvers 5K twice with the same exact time of 22:21, a PR? That would be John Mahoney.
Which recently married new member confessed to folks at Cody’s that her marriage certificate is stamped VOID and she may indeed not even be married because of the wrong date on the certificate? That would be Amber P.
Who was spotted last week at 5:30 AM on the commuter rail on her way to Logan and then to San Diego to go surfing with friends? That would be Eileen Dunn (I am very jealous, Eileen. You are into everything!)
Who’s looking for other members to join them for the Houston Half Marathon in January? That would be Beth and Doug (check out the message board for info.)
Who takes the award for “Best Skipper” at the recently completed Track workouts? That would be Chip Bott (Hey, little Luke looked like a little “chipper off the block” running around the Track the other night. Not bad for a 3 year old!)
Finally, which two members are eagerly awaiting July 13 to make a special purchase? That would be Tim Short and Chip Bott (Hey, Short and Bott–I like that!) The purchase? the new iPhone.
That’s it till next week. Happy running, everybody. Special report coming on the Mt. Washington race taking place on Saturday. Ladies, don’t forget the Louise Rossetti race on Wednesday night.
Under a deep blue sky and a brilliant June sun, there was a strong group of Wicked runners at Forest River Park this morning. We had 19 members running out on the trail and some great conversations were being had! Don’t forget, the Club meets at Forest River Park every Saturday Morning at 8 am. Can’t wait to see everyone next Saturday!
Members of the Wicked Running team raced in the weekly Danvers 5K yesterday - looking good and running well. Naturally, the weather was warm and the beer at Cody’s Brewing was cold!
- John Paul Bosse’ (Who swears he will join me soon for a Slow Run Monday.),
- Tricia Pini (Who is planning to join WRC soon and I am expecting to see her at the next Slow Run Monday!)
- Billy Prentiss (Who is too darn fast for an old guy.)
- Amber Palacola (Who just got married a week or two ago.)
- John Mahoney (Who should be bringing a better camera.)
- Tim Short (Who broke the course record yesterday - again.)
Here are our finishing times:
01) Tim Short 18:19
03) Billy Prentiss 20:54
05) John Mahoney 22:21
08) John Bosse 22:45
12) Amber Palacola 23:24
25) Tricia Pini 33:20
My next planned event is the Sat 8:00 AM group run! Hope to see you there.
This morning’s 5:30 AM run attracted a good sized field of 13 runners: Dan, Steph, Danny, Paula, Karen, Deb, Steve, Rachel, Colin, Tim, Moe, Billy P. and Billy S. The ocean breezes kept things pretty comfortable, although we were all dripping wet at the end. The pre and post run topic of conversation seemed to revolve around everyone’s tatoos. Those without one seem to be in the minority! Stay cool everybody; it’s going to get wicked hot today!
We had a great group for this Monday Night Slow Run with Karen Giroux, Sarah Calland, Joe Ferlazzo, Allison Rourke, and John Mahoney. (Karen was camera shy, so she was our photographer.) This was Allison’s first time on a group run since she had knee surgery in February. I think this might have been Sarah’s first group run in a while too. Great to have you back, Sarah and Allison! We were a pretty advanced group for Monday night and the weather was surprisingly cool, so we all finished 4.55 mi (Joe’s GPS gave us the distance). After we finished running we had time to lounge on the back patio and talk some more before parting ways and getting ready for Tuesday. I enjoyed the run and the time after the run. Hope to see more people here next Monday!
