2009 Tribe Baseball 5k

Wicked takes top spot at the 2009 Tribe Baseball 5k!!!

With free beer and free pizza being offered, not even a little drizzle (more like a down pour!) could keep a few members of Wicked away from the 2009 Tribe Baseball 5k. The race took place at the Roadhouse Pub in Peabody and race proceeds went to help Tribe AAU Baseball.

After a somewhat awkward start to the race, it was clear that Dave Long was out to crush the competition. And crush the competition he did. Coming in with a 17:00 which just happens to be a new PR.

Tim Short (second overall) and Billy Prentiss (first 60+ age group)  also had solid efforts, finishing the race in 18:05 and 25:51 respectively.

Eastern 20 miler information! For those who will be running here is some info for the morning of the race.

The busses stop running at 8:45 to take us from the Hampton Casino to the start (where we will entertain ourselves until the 11 am start).  I think we should be there around 8:15 just in case we end up being late for some unforeseeable reason.  That said it takes 45 minutes to get to the Hampton Casino from Salem.  Let’s plan on pulling out at 7:30 sharp, so try and get to the Senior Center at 7:20.  I’ll have the GPS and a set of backup directions to and from the Casino in hand (with extra copies of course).   There is a first aid kit in my car and I’ll pack in some extra water and sunscreen

My guess is that we will return to Salem around 3:30 or a little before depending on when we leave Hampton.  This said, be prepared for a long day with your Wicked awesome friends:)

As I hit that point in my first marathon training experience where I question what I was thinking  . . . I realize that many of you have great learning experiences from running and training for marathons.  Perhaps other newbies like myself could also benefit from your wise words, or even funny tales!  So, send me your advice, learning experiences, funny stories, or encouraging words and I will pull them together anonymously into an article for Wicked Runners like myself–heck maybe even seasoned runners will benefit too.

Sister, club running in director’s memory

Here is a story from the Salem News about yesterdays run at the Salem Commons. Along with the many kids that participated from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem, there were also a few members of the Wicked Running Club enjoying the afternoon as well. For more photos from yesterdays run click on: Boys & Girls Club Marathon kids. Wicked runners who showed up to support the Boys & Girls Club efforts to run 26.2 miles in support of Steve’s team were Steve’s Team members: Beth O’Grady, Karen Giroux, Stephaine Cooper, Alison Phelan and Sally Holtzman. Other wicked runners joining in were: Billy Shea, Patrick Smith, Doug Bollen, John Mahoney and Maria Ramirez.

Sister, club running in director’s memory

By Tom Dalton
Staff writer

SALEM — After Steve O’Grady was killed by a drunken driver 10 years ago, his older sister Beth pledged to run 10 marathons in his memory over the next decade and to raise $40,000 by what would have been his 40th birthday.

Both goals are within sight.

This year’s Boston Marathon on April 20 will be her 10th.

When she crosses the finish line, O’Grady will have a lot of well-wishers at her side, literally and figuratively.

Family and friends will cheer her on, and members of “Steve’s Team,” a running squad O’Grady formed, will be running with her on the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston.

And members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem, where Steve O’Grady was executive director, will be in her thoughts and pushing her along, though they won’t be running the Boston Marathon themselves.

Since the start of the year, nearly 100 members of the youth organization have been running to raise money in Steve O’Grady’s memory. With the help of pledges secured by the club’s board, they expect to raise $2,620 — $100 for each mile of the marathon.

The children have been running inside the old gym at the Hawthorne Boulevard headquarters of the club. Yesterday, more than 50 children joined O’Grady to run outside on the cinder track around Salem Common.

Although many were born after the crash, the kids have been learning about the former director, a popular youth leader and Little League manager who was killed just weeks after his 30th birthday. They have read news clippings and even watched a video of Steve O’Grady leading a tour of the club, a film made just days before he died.

Beth O’Grady is all smiles during yesterday’s run at the Salem Common.

“I felt it would be kind of nice to run in honor of him because he was a big influence on the club,” said Connor Antony, 10, a fifth-grader at Witchcraft Heights School.

The goal for older children is to try to run all 26 miles between Jan. 1 and the actual marathon.

One of the most impressive feats has been turned in by a young club member. Before yesterday’s run, Qasim El-Ashkar, 8, had run 15 miles, all of it inside the club’s gym. That translates to 379 laps.

“Sometimes I walk,” said the second-grader at Bentley School.

The club members who have been running in Steve O’Grady’s memory have received an invitation to Fenway Park to be recognized on the field at a Red Sox game the day before the marathon. The club is working out details now.

Beth O’Grady, a former president of the Boys & Girls Club, beamed yesterday as she stood on the Common watching the little children stretching with members of the Salem High School track team, some of whom are former club members.

The track team came down because its assistant coach, Karen Giroux, is a member of “Steve’s Team.”

“I just love it,” O’Grady said. “This is what we hoped for — to bring together as many kids in the community as possible.”

Run to the Beach 30k

In photo back row: Bruce Campbell, Sally Holtzman, Bill Shea, Karen Girous, Becky Fiore. Front L to R: Alison Phelan, Beth O’Grady and Melissa Jaynes. Melissa is training for the Vermont City Marathon, and the rest of the crew is preparing for Boston.

9 Wicked Running members took part in the “Run to the Beach 30k” on Sunday, March 15. This FREE organized training run attracted 100 runners and spanned from North Andover to Salisbury. It was a nice treat to be handed water every 5 miles or so, and although the course was hilly, it was balanced by beautiful early spring weather.

At the end of the day, no one had any complaints and everyone was happy with their finish time. The best part was running back to the car for a tailgate party of homemade cookies, salty snacks and ice cold water. It was a wicked good team effort!

Ziggy’s Donuts: The Official Energy Food of Tues. AM Runners

“Runner’s don’t eat donuts.” “You guys out for a swim?” “Is this a road race?”  were among the comments from regular customers when a dozen Wicked Runners detoured to Ziggy’s donuts while on the usual Tuesday morning run today.    Although the sign said “Closed” our noses told us a different story when we arrived outside the shop just before 6:30am.    The delicious smell of breakfast delights enticed us all to stand in the cold until the unsuspecting shop owner opened the door.    We were not disappointed.  Moments later we were enjoying piping hot treats and declaring “Who needs Power Bars!”     The side trip taken today to celebrate the coming of spring (despite the 20 degree temp) could become a regular feature of the Tuesday/Thursday runs.  After all isn’t this why we run?

Good Wicked showing as a number of members won medals including Melissa Shea, James Deluca, Rich Tomlins, Doug Chick, and David Long. Gail Gordon was the second overall woman.  Results are on coolrunning.  There were 334 runners to make it the highest turnout ever for this race.  Many were first time runners to the course and got a rude awakening to the hills!!! Thank you all for your support. Special thank you to the Wicked volunteers : Beth O’ Grady, Eileen Dunn, Melissa Jaynes and Nicole Bevington’s brother, Dominic Bevington, and the Tocuhette’s who ran the race and then jumped in to help at the finish chute. Although I joined some time ago, my time on the North Shore has been pretty non-existent, so I have not yet had the pleasure of running with or meeting anyone. I will be running in the Great Bay Half on April 5th, and hope to meet some of you then.

I’m writing now, however, to invite anyone who may be interested to come to Nantucket for an event. There will be a triathlon on July 11th on the island. I’d be happy to put up a few folks who may be interested. My house is small but cozy, (with an outdoor shower.) I can host up to five or six people. I won’t be participating in the triathlon. I am a chef and that’s our busy time, but thought this might be a chance for others who might like an excuse to the island (and have a place to stay!) I can be reached at mjmojer@yahoo.com

From Dan Barrett and Gail Gordon

Gail Gordon and I will be running the New Bedford Half Marathon this Sunday (March 15th, 11:00 a.m.) This is race number two in the USATF-New England Grand Prix. Unfortunately, it was just Gail and I in the 10 Mile Amherst Run.

So Wicked Running Club never got listed in results, but it requires a minimum of 5 people to make a team. You do have to sign up as member for USATF and cross reference Wicked Running Club if you want to be counted in the team. (But, you don’t have to if you want to just run individually) http://www.usatfne.org/road/gp.html

Are there any other Wicked Runners running this event? Please let us know. Thank you

Blog entry from the Dungeon Rock Racing.  DDR recently competed in the Nationals at Mt. Hood in Oregon

Bill, Dan, Jay, Steph, and Patrick’s excellent adventure continues………..
DRR had the game plan, a day to get familiar with the course and conditions, a fuel loading team meal (jelly sticks and Hostess Snowballs on hold until after the race), a good night’s rest, DRR was going to make its mark. Then there’s Mother Nature…….Race morning had surprised us with another 10 inches of snow on top of the 4-5 inches the day before, and still snowing. Seven miles from the race at the base of Mount Hood, mostly uphill, and we had a team minivan. Race day start event, put on the tire chains. Dan, this wasn’t supposed to be this hard. With a race time of 11am for the Women’s’ and 11:45 for the men, we thought we had plenty of time. An hour later the chains were still being adjusted and the seven miles were going to be at 30mph and under. We could snowshoe faster than that. A little rushed to get out, DRR was on the move, its time to get racin’. As soon as we hit the road, the sun came out. Maybe the day was going to be good after all. But similar to New England, the Mt. Hood locals have a saying for the region, “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute”. Sound familiar? The day would be a constant of a cycle of sun, dark skies-snow showers, sun, and snow showers, repeat.

The race start at Mt. Hood Snow Park had 15-inches of new snow and we would find the course was nothing like it was the day before. And the circus tent set up the day before for sponsors, officials and awards had collapsed under the weight of the heavy snow. There would be no passing zones outside the single track pack unless you wanted to get buried deep in snow; the only pass would be if the racer blocking your path would step aside when you shouted out “track”. On top of this, the bad weather in the morning delayed the early races, which were already perhaps packed too close together. Each race (5 scheduled) would find the fastest of the next trying to pass-by the slower of the previous. This would be a challenging day. The winner of the first race (Citizen’s) would turn in a time of 40 min plus for a 5k. The 10k was going to be a long race. Read more at http://dungeonrockracing.blogspot.com/

Hyannis 1/2 Marathon..With Tricia Pini

Wicked Reporter Tricia Pini on her experiences with the Hyannis 1/2 Marathon

I’m happy(?) to report I crossed the finish line ahead of  61 other runners…. out of 2,044! I barely feel the need to share my time (2:39:47).  Guess I’ll keep on plugging away at it!

Some winter weekend in Hyannis highlights: I stood in line for an hour to speak with Bill Rogers and Frank Shorter. They were great and witty, and the guy behind me in line was kind enough to take a picture for me.

I actually looked amazing in the photos!!!  (Well, when I got back to Salem I managed to delete all the photos off the camera’s memory card in an attempt to transfer them to my PC.)
While waiting in line to meet the great old-timers who walks into the hall but James DeLuca!  He drove down to Hyannis to pick up his race bib, then turned around and headed to the Salem Moose Lodge for the WRC movie night?!?  That little 2-seater must be pretty special! Thankfully the cold rain held off until mile 9-10… for me that is.  Many runners were already freshly showered and enjoying the postrace festivities at the 19th Hole!
I meet some great people from Worcester who own a pub called The Greyhound.  They have a 5k run every Monday night, so if you’re in Worcester look it up!

WICKED 5 TAKES ON SNOWSHOE NATIONALS

Wicked’s sister race team, Dungeon Rock Racing (DRR) is sending 5 WRC/DRR runners to the 2009 U.S. Snowshoe Association (USSSA) National race to be held on March 8th at Oregon’s fabled Mount Hood.  Led by Admiral (recent promotion) Bill Morse on his 4th trip to Nationals, the Wicked-DRR crew is looking strong, looking tough, looking race ready.  Bill is joined by Captains Dan Cooper, Jay Curry and Patrick Smith, and representing the entire DRR crew of the ship, Steph Cooper.   All qualified for Nationals by having a stellar performance at the regional qualifier at Sidehiller (C. Sandwich, NH) back on Feb 7th.  In the inaugural year for DRR, the fab 5 lead DRR to a second place finish at this year’s Granite State Snowshoe Series (2nd of 28!).  Many other Wicked Runners gave a big helping stride at the GSSS races this past year.  Thanks everyone!

The fab 5 will be taking on some of the best trailrunners/snowshoers in the country.  DRR expects to get the toughest competition from the grizzled veterans of Minnesota, Colorado, and the host state Oregon.  The team has been on a strict diet that has limited the number of jelly sticks Patrick can eat and number of Hostess Snow Balls Dan can eat.  As Dan notes, “Its shear sugar torture!”.

Look for daily DRR updates on the DRR blog by Dan “media-man” Cooper.

This will be a “Wicked” good time
