Upcoming Races

From Tim Short

8th Annual International Race for Research on September 12th, 2009 at 9 am in Peabody, MA. Your club has been well represented in past years and we hope you will be able to participate once again this year.

As you know, this is a benefit 5K road race and 2-mile fun run/walk to help find the cure for Progeria, a fatal, “premature aging” syndrome that afflicts children. We are nearing the end of our first ever progeria drug trial at Children’s Hospital, potentially offering great hope to these beautiful children with Progeria. We need your support more than ever as we move forward in our quest to find a cure for this devastating disease.

We had over 250 participants last year and hope to make this year our best ever! We’d appreciate your putting our race event on your club calendar and “talking it up” amongst your members. I would be happy to send you some race applications in advance to make in-person registration easier for your members. We also have online registration again this year at www.firstgiving.com/prf

“Running With the Wolves 10K” The Highland City Striders, a new Massachusetts running club based out of Hudson/Marlborough, will be hosting it’s first annual “Running With the Wolves 10K” race on Wednesday, August 5th. We would greatly appreciate your help spreading the word about this race by either providing the link below to your runners or posting the link on your website. This race would be convenient to anyone who works in the Framingham area. http://www.freewebs.com/hcstriders/runningwithwolves10k.htm

We are pleased to announce that registration for this year’s 69th Ollie Road Race has begun and our website for the 2009 race is up and running at www.ollieroadrace.org.

2009 Ollie Road Race. Our new online registration will allow you to register runners other than yourself. You can download the paper application and mail multiple applications to the address below. Or you can download and complete our bulk registration form. The bulk registration form can be mailed to the address below or emailed to registration@ollieroadrace.org.

If you submit 5 or more club entries together by August 25th, there will be a $3 discount (24.00 Per Particpant) on each entry. Please remember that this pre-registration offer ends on August 25th, applications received after this date will not be considered for this offer.

Ollie Road Race
136 H Street
South Boston, MA 02127

This year’s race will take place the second weekend in September.

5 Mile Run/2 Mile Walk: Saturday, September 12, 10am
Bank of America Pavilion, 290 Northern Ave., Boston, MA 02210

Youth Races and Block Party: Sunday, September 13, 9am
South Boston Neighborhood House, 136 H St., South Boston, MA 02127

As many of you know, the Ollie Road Race is a critical fundraiser for the South Boston Neighborhood House. Since 1901, the South Boston Neighborhood House has been helping individuals and families become self-sufficient and prosper in society. In these challenging economic times, your support is needed more than ever and will ensure that the Neighborhood House can continue these efforts. Please encourage your team to accept the Run For The Ollie – Race To The Finish challenge to raise funds for this worthy cause.

In the past, we’ve had as many as 1700 runners. In order for the South Boston Neighborhood house to continue to operate future races we will need the broad based fundraising support of our participants. An increased focus on fundraising is critical to the long-term sustainability of the Ollie Road Race. Last year, 15 runners/walkers participated in the “Run for the Ollie” challenge and raised $5437.25, imagine what 100 participants could accomplish? Or 1000? If 200 runners each raise $100 (do you have 10 friends that would each support your run with $10?), they could raise $20,000 for the South Boston Neighborhood House! It’s that simple.

Raise $$$ + Run & Enjoy Race = Real Results.

Click here for more information on how to participate and our incentive packages:

Help us continue a Boston running tradition. Take our CHALLENGE and raise funds for the programs at the South Boston Neighborhood House. And help ensure that the Ollie Road Race is held for years to come.

2009 Ford Ironman at Lake Placid

Running 26.2 miles is probably one of the most difficult endurance races that most people will ever do. But I challenge you to try doing a 2.4 mile swim and a 112 mile bike ride before running a marathon. Do all three of these events during the same day and people might call you crazy. What you would really be called is an Ironman!

usa_logo1

Wicked was well represented at the Ford Ironman in Lake Placid on July 26th. Tim Clarke, Patrick Smith, Jay Curry, and Denise Murphy all competed, and completed the daunting challenge. Congratulations to Tim, Patrick, Jay, and Denise Murphy on a job well done!

2009 Yankee Homecoming 5K/10M Road Race

yankee-logo

Once again the weather for the Yankee Homecoming Road Race was hot and humid, though not as bad as previous years it still provided a decent challenge to the nearly three thousand runners who participated in either the 5K or 10M last night.

Wicked had a strong showing both in the 5K and 10M.  Just about 30 Wicked Runners headed up to Newburport to take on this classic road race, which is part of the Wicked Grand Prix Race Series. Great job to everyone who ran!!

Results for both 5K and 10M are below.  Grand Prix results will be available on Friday with the Wicked Weekly Update. For the complete results head on over to coolrunning.com.

Looks like there is No Rest for the Wicked! Our next Grand Prix race will be the Beverly Homecoming 5K, next Thursday, August 6th at 6:30 pm.  To download the race application head on over to northshoreymca.org or to register on line go to runreg.com!

Come and celebrate Wicked Running Club’s 5th Anniversary!!! This event is open to all WRC members and their families! We hope you can make it!

Haven’t received many responses for this, so we will try one more time…One of the many things that will be happening during the party will be a photo slideshow with music. Please pick 1-2 photos by July 27th if you would like your photo(s) to be in the slide show. Photos can be of you before being a member of the Wicked Running Club, but it would be great if you could send in at least one photo of yourself in some Wicked Gear! As for the music, pick the names of 2 songs by July 27th. We will then have a vote to determine the top 5 songs to be used. Send both Photos and songs to Tim Short at tim.short1@gmail.com.

1st Annual Wicked Kidz 1/2 Mile & 1 Mile Results

wicked_kidz-for-web1

The 1st Annual Wicked Kidz 1/2 mile & 1 mile race was a total hit! Though the weather could have been better, the race featured ribbons for all who finished, t-shirts, trophies/medals, chicken sandwiches/nuggets from Chic-fil-A of Peabody, fresh fruit from McKinnon’s of Danvers and Wicked Kidz tattoos! Oh and the famous Chic-fil-A Cow made an appearance which all the Kidz seemed to love.  Below are the results from the races. Check out the photos from the event at:  http://photobucket.com/wickedkidz

On The Run

Jay Kumar

There are many benefits to running, both physical and mental. People have their own reasons for running, whether it’s simply to stay fit, to clear their minds after a tough day at the office or to lose weight.

Another benefit that has been oft-discussed over the years is the runner’s high, that elusive state of euphoria that some runners say they feel during or after a run. But does the runner’s high truly exist or is it simply a mythical state created to sell running shoes?

The long-held theory was that intense exercise releases mood-altering chemicals called endorphins into the brain, resulting in the so-called high. But the theory remained just that until 2008, when German researchers were able to conclusively prove that running does cause the release of endorphins. The more endorphins a runner produces, the greater the effect.

According to the New York Times, researchers led by Dr. Henning Boecker of the University of Bonn used positron emission tomography (PET) scans and chemicals that reveal endorphins in the brain to compare runners’ brains before and after a long run. Ten distance runners were recruited for the study but were not told that the researchers were looking at endorphin release and runner’s high.

The runners were given PET scans before and after a two-hour run, as well as a standard psychological test to indicate their moods before and after the run. The study found that endorphins were produced during running and were attaching themselves to brain areas associated with emotions, specifically the limbic and prefrontal areas. Boecker told the Times that those areas are also activated when people are in love or when they hear a piece of music that causes euphoria.

All of this is well and good, but do you feel euphoric during or after your runs? I can’t honestly say that I do. Some runs leave me feeling better or happier than others, depending on how well the run went. I definitely feel better about life in general after I complete a run, but I’m not sure I would characterize that as the same way I feel when the Patriots won the Super Bowl.

I do think I feel the runner’s low, which is when I’m unable to get a run in for various reasons. If I don’t get three or more runs in each week, it definitely causes a little depression. And sometimes when I’m running, I don’t feel particularly good while I’m out there, but afterward, I’ll be glad that I ran. I wouldn’t call it a high, but that good feeling has got to count for something, right?

Starts and stops

A new study out of the UK makes perfect sense to me: Researchers at Keele University found that swearing helps with pain relief, according to a BBC News article. Dr. Richard Stephens and his team found that volunteers who swore profusely could endure pain nearly 50% longer than their more polite peers. Stephens got the idea for the study after swearing when he accidentally hit his thumb with a hammer while working on a garden shed. For the study, 64 volunteers were asked to submerge a hand in a tub of freezing water for as long as possible while repeating a swear word of their choice. They then repeated the task using a non-profanity. The volunteers were able to keep their hands submerged for an average of two minutes when using saltier language, compared with only 1:15 when they refrained from swearing. The researchers believed the pain-lessening effect occurs because swearing triggers our natural “fight or flight” response. Remember this study the next time you strain a muscle or trip on a rock while running; just be prepared to state the pertinent facts when you start dropping verbal bombs and get some perturbed looks from those around you.

On Saturday, July 18 at 9 a.m., the Wicked Running Club in partnership with the Salem Park and Recreation Department will host the first “Wicked Kidz” 1/2 Mile and 1 Mile Race at Forest River Park. Registration is $2 for each race. Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, medals to top three in each age group and ribbons to all finishers with shirts to the first 50 registrants. There will also be post-race food and beverages; sponsors are Chick-fil-A of Peabody and McKinnon’s of Danvers.

“No Rest for the Wicked”-New Club Run

wicked-cat2

Wicked is now offering another Club organized run! For those who are interested, the “No Rest for the Wicked” (“NRFTW”) meets every Thursday at 6:45p.m. at the Salem Common entrance by the Hawthorne Hotel. Just like any other Club run, it will be held “rain or shine,” provided there are no municipal/governmental storm warnings in effect requesting people to stay at home.

The route (map of route) is about 3.2 miles, starting at the Salem Common, going along Little Hawthorne Blvd, a left on Derby, partway into Juniper Point, a left on Lowell, continuing through the Willows parking lot area, left on Memorial (which becomes Essex Street Eventually), left on Little Hawthorne Blvd, and finishing at the corner of Little Hawthorne Blvd and Derby Street by the Immaculate Conception parking lot.

After the run those interested meet at the nearby Engine House Pizza restaurant for an inexpensive supper.

Mia Poppe, who has been organizing this run for the past couple of weeks has also created a facebook page, check it out when you get a chance!
