Swimsuit Classic in Wakefield

By James DeLuca

It was a hot Sunday morning; the sort of morning that just begs for you to trade your running shoes for a bathing suit and find the nearest piece of sand to lie down on for a good four hours…hopefully with a steady supply of frozen drinks. In other words it was a perfect day for the Mystic Runners’ Swimsuit Classis in Wakefield. Six Wicked Runners joined a crowd of 170 runners who braved the heat to and came home with 4 towels from Age Group victories. Notable was Billy Prentiss’ return to the winner’s circle on his way back from surgery last fall.

Despite the blazing sun and the suffocating humidity both Batman and Robin were seen out on the course. The two masked heroes took off with superhuman speed at the start of the race and the youthful Robin managed to hold on for 5th place overall but in his black cape and suit Batman faded back to 63rd place.

As they usually do, the Mystics came through with a well organized race with plenty of post-race food, good raffle prizes and a unique bag (last year a drawstring bag for sprint spikes, this year a canvas duffle bag) rather than the ubiquitous white cotton T. All in all, high marks to Mystics for a good race and congratulations to Wicked for a great showing all around and cleaning up at the awards ceremony; this is a race to keep on your calendar.

2009 Ford Ironman at Lake Placid

Running 26.2 miles is probably one of the most difficult endurance races that most people will ever do. But I challenge you to try doing a 2.4 mile swim and a 112 mile bike ride before running a marathon. Do all three of these events during the same day and people might call you crazy. What you would really be called is an Ironman!

Wicked was well represented at the Ford Ironman in Lake Placid on July 26th. Tim Clarke, Patrick Smith, Jay Curry, and Denise Murphy all competed, and completed the daunting challenge. Congratulations to Tim, Patrick, Jay, and Denise Murphy on a job well done!

Billy Shea making his way to the finish

Under a cloudy sky and humid conditions the 25th Annual running of the Danvers Kiwanis 5 Miler featured a pack of Wicked Runners that came ready to race.

Though conditions for the most part were lousy, the race conditions were perfect for Annie Rose Willis who lead the way for Wicked, taking  first place overall in the Women’s Division with a time of 32:21. Rich Tomlins had a strong performance for the Wicked Men with a 30:03.  New Wicked member Jay Middleton also got in the action with his very first Wicked Grand Prix Race!

As reported in a previous post, there was some mix up with getting the results up on Cool Running because of timing issues and a few walkers that got mixed in with the running results. Results are now posted on Cool Running and can be viewed by clicking here. More photos coming soon!

49th Annual Mount Washington Road Race

main-title1

Road racing on Fathers Day Weekend in New England  started off with one of the most popular mountain races around, the Mount Washington Road Race. While there might only be one hill during this race, it’s the longest and most challenging hill any runner will probably ever face. The race is 7.6 miles and has runners traveling along the Auto Road. Now that may seem like a an easy race, but with an average grade of 11.5 %, with other sections being 18% and the final 50 yards a astonishing 22%, this is no piece of cake race. Oh, and did I mention that the only way to get into this race in the first place is through a lottery system?

With the challenge laid out before them Bill Morse, Steph Cooper, Shari Hewson, and Ken Hewson, battled the only hill that the race had and below are the results from the race. Congratulations to all of them on a great race! Way to represent Wicked!!

Kyle Hewson completes his first 5k in dramatic fashion!

Wicked Kidz member Kyle Hewson at the finish line of the Our Two Angels road race

Apparently eating chocolate donuts is the key to doing well in road races. Just ask Kyle Hewson.  Kyle who ran in his very first 5k at the Our Two Angels Road Race came in first place in the 1-19 age group with a speedy 32:54. Congratulations Kyle!
