Salem Health and Wellness Week-Movie Night

Wicked will be participating in the Salem Health and Wellness Week (April 12-17, 2010)  by teaming up with the Salem Park & Recreation Department and offering a community movie night!

On Friday April 16, 2010 Wicked and Salem Park & Rec will show two fantastic running movies at the Winter Island Function Hall which is located at 50 Winter Island Road in Salem, MA.  Doors will open around 6:30 pm and the movies will start at 7 pm.

The first movie that will be shown will be Fire on the Track! This is a Steve Prefontaine documentary (The best documentary on his life, Linda Prefontaine-sister of Pre). The second movie will be Spirit of the Marathon.

Spirit of the Marathon is the first ever non-fiction feature film to capture the drama and essence of the famed 26.2 mile running event. Filmed on four continents, the movie brings together a diverse cast of amateur athletes and marathon luminaries. As six unique stories unfold, each runner prepares for and ultimately faces the challenge of the Chicago Marathon. More than a sports movie, Spirit of the Marathon is an inspirational journey of perseverance and personal triumph; a spectacle that will be embraced by runners and non-runners alike.

There will be popcorn, soda, and water available. Cost of admission is nothing! A raffle will also take place with some very exciting items!

For more information please contact Tim Short.

Wicked Receives Community Partnership Award!

At the recent Salem Park & Recreation Commission Awards Ceremony, the Wicked Running Club received the Community Partnership Award for its outstanding contribution to the Park and Recreation Department in 2009. Back in 2008 Wicked received the Innovative Program Award after bursting onto the scene with a hit road race…the Wicked Frosty Four! At that point Wicked had just about 70 members. Fast forward to 2010 and the club now has close to 250 members! Wicked has partnered up with the Park and Recreation Department on many activities around Salem including the Wicked Kidz 1/2 Mile & Mile Race and a community movie night. With so much momentum going Wicked’s way right now, its an exciting time to be a member. This award is an amazing honor and one that should make every Wicked Runner proud.

With the help of some friends, the Wicked Running Club in partnership with the Salem Park & Recreation Department collect 67 pairs of shoes to be donated to the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program! A big thanks to Salem Park & Rec for allowing Wicked to place the shoe bins at the Senior Center! Now you ask, what will happen to all those shoes? Well in a few weeks they will be transported to the Niketown store in Boston. If there is anyone interested in heading into Boston to visit Niketown keep your eyes peeled for a email from Tim Short! Thank you to everyone who donated shoes! For those who are interested in learning more about the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program please visit www.nikereuseashoe.com.

Club Night @ New England Running Co. [Updated]

A great time was had by all at our recent Club Night @ New England Running Company. Dave Menosky treated members of Wicked to pizza from Not Your Average Joe’s. Apparently runners like pizza because Dave had to order 15 pizzas for the hungry crew! There was also plenty of cold frosty beer on hand as well to wash it all down. While some were eating, others looked for new clothing or a pair of gloves to take advantage of the special 20% discount that club members got that night. A special thank you to the entire staff of New England Running Company!

Holiday Toy Drive

untitled

Anyone that is interested in donating toys or gift cards can now drop them off at New England Running Co. in Beverly!

This year, in conjunction with the Greater Salem Boys & Girls Club & New England Running Company, Wicked Running Club is sponsoring a toy drive for its members.  Here are the details for donating new toys to underprivileged children, of all ages, this holiday season:

The toy drive has started and will end on December 20th. Toys should be new and unwrapped. Gift cards would be great for the older kids. The Board recommends donating toys in the amount of $10 and greater.

Wicked will be donating the toys/gift cards to the Greater Salem Boys & Girls Club. Toys can be dropped off at Tues/Thurs runs with Alison Phelan or Saturday morning with Tim Short, or any other Board member present for the Saturday run. Gift cards to places like Target and Wal-Mart are great for older kids and young teens as people normally think of a toy drive for just young kids. Thanksgiving is here and that can mean only one thing..it’s time to strap on your racing shoes and take part in the 6th Wild Turkey 5 Miler! Election Season Has Begun!

It’s time to start thinking about the election of Board members from the Wicked Running Club for 2010! As many of you know, the nomination period started this week and will continue for the next two weeks. After that, people who have been nominated to a position are encouraged to give a nomination statement at the General Membership Meeting on Monday November, 2nd 2009 at the Salem Senior Center. Elections will take place during December. Below is the email that Vice President Doug Bollen sent out on Tuesday.  If  you have  any questions about the nomination committee or nomination period please email Doug at dougbollen12@yahoo.com.

From Doug Bollen

As Vice President I am responsible for organizing and overseeing the election process for the upcoming year. I am forming a Sub Committee to help the nomination/election process.  The Committee will be made up of 2-4 members from the Club. People on the committee can not nominate themselves, but can have other members outside of the committee nominate them , otherwise if you are not on committee you can nominate yourself.

You will have two weeks to be nominated and then we will be having a membership/board meeting on Monday, November 2. where you can speak or present a letter regarding your intentions/campaign  etc.  on why you want to be on the board.

The election will take place in December.  I do anticipate some of the current board members not seeking re-election and hope to see some new people running for a position. I personally am stepping down after five years on the board, but intent on remaining very active. The club has grown to over 200 members and needs an active board to keep all the programs strong.

Please contact me if you would like to be on the nomination committee.
