51st Annual Yankee Homecoming Road Races

If there is one race on the North Shore that screams “summer time classic” it has to be the Yankee Homecoming Road Races. Both the 5K and 10M are held on a Tuesday night and one can usually expect the weather to be hazy, hot and very humid.

The 51st edition of this race saw 1,759 runners finish the 5K while the 10 Miler had 1,253 runners cross the finish line. Just over 3,000 runners combine for both races is a decent showing for a race that takes place at 6PM early in the work week. Right before the start of both races there was quick shower,  but it didn’t really cool things off too much.  As runners started it was warm, but not to bad.

Wicked selected the 10 Miler has part of the this year’s club Grand Prix Series and over 40 Wicked Runners made the trip up route 95.  We also had representation in the 5K.

Leading the way for the guys, Dave Long with a very impressive 103:59. Annie Rose Willis ran strong for the ladies, finishing in 1:13: 27.

Below are the results from both races. If you do not see your name and you did run the 5K or 10M,  please send an email to Tim Short and he will update the results. Full Grand Prix results will be coming out in the next few days so check back here real soon!

Wicked Grand Prix Results – Jennifer Tinney 5 Mile Road Race

By Rich Tabbut

Co-Grand Prix Coordinator

Twenty nine members started their July 4th early by competing at 20th edition of the Jennifer Tinney Memorial 5 mile road race in Boxford, MA. John Ayers improved over the last series race by dominating the entire field and winning in 27:44, a minute and a half faster than his nearest competition. Salem News All-Stars Wendi Marciano and Kerry Phelan finished 1st and 3rd in the 19 and under division. Other members placing in their divisions included Billy Jackson ((2nd 20-29), Tim Short (3rd 30-39), Beth O’Grady (1st 50-59), Hammer (1st 50-59), and Rick Marciano (3rd 50-59). Injured Grand Prix Race co-coordinator T.R. led his much appreciated cheering section at the finish line. Six members ran their first Grand Prix Series Race and we now have 113 participants.

Team Cougars leaped ahead of the rest of the field to lead the team series with 210 points. They are closely followed by the Panthers, Lions, Lynx, Wildcats, and Tigers with 190 points. Billy Jackson increased his lead over Chris Nolan to 5 points in the male division. Wendi Marciano jumped over Catalina Dominick and leads the female division by 24 points.

Please e-mail any corrections to me at welshhammer@gmail.com. The corrections will appear in the next series results. The next race in the series is the 51st Annual Newburyport Yankee Homecoming Race on August 2nd at 6:10 p.m. The 10 miler is followed by two other unique Grand Prix races in August. The Derby Street Mile is on Friday, August 19th and the Lynn Woods Relay is on Wednesday, August 24th. See you at the races!

April Fool’s Four Miler – Wicked Grand Prix Results

A line of Wicked Runners stand ready to cheer on fellow members of WRC or anyone that comes by!

By Rich Tabbut

Co-Grand Prix Coordinator

Thirty brave members traveled to Salisbury in less than ideal conditions to run in the bar race in our series. We added nine members to the series and now have a total of 92 participants! Four members took home medals at the race. Of special note is that Wicked took first and second place in the female under 19 division as Catalina Dominick and Wendi Marciano ran excellent races. Afterwards everyone enjoyed their beers as the race was replayed on television screens throughout the Winners Circle facility.

The team series is starting to take shape as the Cheetahs bolted to the lead with 130 points. Trailing closely behind tied for second are the Panthers, Lions, Lynx, and the Cougars. Dave Long holds a slim 4 point lead over Tim Short in total points in the male division. Catalina Dominick has a 6 point advantage over Wendi Marciano in the female division. We were all pleasantly surprised to see T.R. show up just before the race started. Everyone appreciated his encouraging comments at the corner just before the finish. I was very pleased to see our members go join T.R. cheer everyone on after they finished the race. This club spirit is what we had in mind in creating the Grand Prix Series.

Please e-mail any corrections to me at welshhammer@gmail.com. The corrections will appear in the next series results. We decided to give our Boston Marathon competitors a break by scheduling the next race in May. Good luck to everyone at Boston! The next race is the Twin Lights Half Marathon starting at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester on May 15th at 10 a.m. See you there!

Thanks to Michele Campbell for inserting the pictures into the team results!!

Wicked Grand Prix Race Series Updated

The 2010 Wicked Grand Prix Race Series ended with the conclusion of the Wild Turkey 5 Mile Run in Salem back on Thanksgiving. This year there were 103 runners that completed the Wild Turkey 5 Mile Run from the Wicked Running Club, which is amazing.

It was a brutal year for the Wicked Grand Prix Race Series though, with only 14 Wicked Runners actually finishing the series! There is talk of a revamp of the series for 2011 with a team approach to get more Wicked Runners involved. Stay tuned for the details!

Our stat man, Dan Barrett has compiled all the data and you can now find out how you and your fellow Wicked buddies did during the Wild Turkey 5 Mile race as well as the final standings of the Wicked Grand Prix Series.

Congrats to the 14 Wicked Runners who finished completed the series!

Thank you to Dan Barrett and T.R. Ramsdell on organizing this years Grand Prix series. Lots of hard work went into not only selecting the races but informing Wicked Runners of the series and keep the Grand Prix page up to date for everyone in Wicked.

Baystate Marathon and Lowell Sun Half Marathon

What a difference a year makes! Runners who participated in this years Baystate Marathon and Lowell Sun Half Marathon were greeted with an abundance of sunshine and cool temperatures at the start of the race. During the race it reached into the 60′s but was still very comfortable. For those who ran last year, I’m sure you all have memories of running in the cold rain and for some off us a little snow as well.

There was plenty of water/Gatorade on the course for all runners and a GU station for the marathon near miles 7/17 made sure that everyone had plenty of fuel for the race. Runners were treated to soup, fruit, chips and other good stuff when they reached finished.

Wicked was well represented in both the Marathon and Half Marathon this year as both distances were in the Wicked Grand Prix race series. There were a few PR’s, a couple of first timers to the half marathon distance and there were some Wicked Runners who just gave it their all to get to the finish line. Some ended their runs with smiles and others wondered if they will even run a marathon again. Whether you were in the Half or the Marathon, great job to every Wicked Runner who ran!

A very big congratulations to our very own Gail Gordon who qualified for the Boston Marathon and was able to register yesterday morning with an assist from Dan Barrett.

Below are the results from both races. Please email Tim Short if you do not see your name and he will update the list.
