Records are broken (again!) at 5th Annual Wicked Frosty Four

For the second year in a row the Wicked Frosty Four wasn’t so frosty! The record breaking 770 registered runners who took part in the New Year’s Day race didn’t seem to mind the mild temperatures. In fact, the overall male and female winner set new course records! Eric Sofen (21:25) and Christine Koch 24:59 dominated the field.

The Frosty Four was also a Road Runners Club of America State Championship Race. Road Runners Club of America is the oldest and largest national association of running clubs, running events, and runners dedicated to promoting running as a competitive sport and as healthy exercise. The goal of the RRCA Championship Event Series is to shine a spotlight on well-run events and to award top performing runners in the open, masters (40+), grand masters (50+), and senior grand masters (60+) categories for both men and women. Wicked Announces Scholarship Winners

The Wicked Running Club is pleased to announce that Scott O’Neil, Courtney Maher, Saleena Glowik and Dominic Barceleau have been selected as this year’s Wicked Frosty Four Scholarship recipients. Each Student-Athlete will receive a $1250.00 check along with a one year membership with the Wicked Running Club.

Thanks to generous race sponsors like Tavern in the Square and North Shore Medical Center, along with the many runners who participated in this year’s Wicked Frosty Four,  the Wicked Running Club was able to increase the overall amount given to the scholarship winners from last year. This year, Wicked will give 4 scholarship totaling $5000.00. Portion of the race proceeds from the Wicked Frosty Four go to fund the yearly scholarship.

A big thank you to the Scholarship Committee from the Wicked Running Club. There were over 10 applicants this year for the Wicked Frosty Four Scholarship and while all were certainly worthy, only a select 4 made the cut. The Scholarship Committee did a wonderful job this year and they deserve a lot of credit for volunteering their time and energy in selecting the Wicked Frosty Four Scholarship winners.

Save the date for the 5th Annual Wicked Frosty Four – January 1, 2012!

Unseasonably warm temperatures on New Year’s Day led to a tremendous showing for the fourth annual Wicked Frosty Four road race in Salem.

Race organizers had been expecting close to 500 runners, but the event ended up drawing 742 registrants, said co-race director Shari Hewson of Salem’s Wicked Running Club. In addition to receiving many registrations in the week leading up to the race, there were about 140 runners who signed up on Saturday morning.

“I thought it went phenomenally well,” Hewson said, citing the help provided by a crew of 45 volunteers.

One big change for 2011 involved moving the post-race celebration from the Old Town Meeting Hall to the Tavern in the Square. “Everyone’s in a good mood,” she said.

The sun was shining and temperatures reached into the low 50s, a stark contrast to the chilly conditions runners braved in the previous three Frosty Four races. Temperatures for last year’s race were in the 20s, but in 2009, runners braved subzero temperatures and strong winds. Not so on Saturday as veteran racers and New Year’s resolution-makers alike made their way from downtown Salem through the Willows and back.

4th Annual Wicked Frosty Four Breaks Records!

Maybe it was the warm weather, maybe it was all the friendly volunteers, or maybe the Wicked Frosty Four is just the race to be at on New Year’s Day, whatever the reason is, the 4th Annual Wicked Frosty Four smashed it’s own records for registered runners (742) and finishing runners (639).

The race started on Front Street in front of Old Town Hall, but the crowd of runners went all the way back to Washington Street! A few minutes after 10 A.M. runners started their journey through the streets of Salem.

Alex Gomes of Peabody (21:42) and Suzanne Chaves (26:44) of Danvers proved to be a challenge for the rest of the field as they both placed first overall male and female respectively.

Runners were treated to a fun post-race party at Tavern in the Square. While there was the normal bagles, fruit and water for everyone, there was also a buffet for people who were looking for something a little more fulfilling. There was also plenty of beer being served, a runners favorite friend!

Mix 104.1 was also at the Tavern playing music and provided the PA system for the awards ceremony. Speaking of awards, Matt Beals from Tavern in the Square received a special framed Wicked Frosty Four shirt from Co-Race Directors Alison Phelan and Shari Hewson as thanks for the use of the Tavern for the post-race party and generous cash sponsorship.
