Introducing the 2010 Inaugural North Shore Trail Series, brought to you by New England Running Company and Montrail!

The North Shore Trail Series features six local trail races spread across six months. We’ve worked hard to put together a series that showcases the best trail running the North Shore has to offer. Over the course of the series you will experience gentle carriage roads, rocky single track, ocean vistas, and private estates normally closed to the public. With races ranging from a 5k to marathon, by the end of the series you will have experienced the full gamut of trail racing here on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Though the emphasis is on participation, we will be offering awards to top overall finishers and to top age group finishers.

Packet pick up will be held at New England Running Company the day before each race from 10-7PM. Those who pick up their number early will be eligible to enter to win a pair of Montrail shoes. Winners will be announced after each race. In addition, all non sale Montrail shoes will be discounted 20% for the day.

Scoring: Runners score points based on their time as a percentage of the winner’s overall time, making every second count! For example, a winning time of 41:08 gets 100.00 points; a time of 42:21 is worth 97.13, and 1:20:32 gets 51.08 (the winning time being just about 50 percent of that runner’s time). Women’s scoring is based on 100.00 points for the first female finisher. A runner’s top 5 of 6 races are totaled. Twentyfive bonus points will be awarded to any runner completing all 6 races.

Awards:

Runners who complete all six races will be awarded a Montrail series sweatshirt. Runners who complete 5 of 6 races will be awarded a series t-shirt.

Overall male/female winners will be awarded one free pair of Montrail shoes along with a $250.00 gift certificate to New England Running Company and a gift package from the Essex County Greenbelt Association.

Age group male/female winners will receive awards in the following four divisions:

39 and under

40-49

50-59

60 and over

There will be an awards banquet at New England Running Company on November 17, at 7PM.

Heading into the fourth straight day of rain, the Lynn Woods Website proudly posted a scrolling banner that read: ….Realy…Realy…Rain or Shine. So at 6 p.m. 69 teams started the 2010 Lynn Woods Relay!

Wicked posted 5 teams this year after bringing an incredible 12 teams to the 2009 edition of the relay. Many Wicked Runners have been battling various injuries which contributed to the low number of teams for 2010, but in the end everyone did a fantastic job and had a blast even if the conditions were a little sloppy!

For the second year in a row a Masters team from WRC took home first place in the Mens Masters Division! This years teams had the following Wicked Runners: TR Ramsdell, Patrick Smith, Colin Maclay and John Ayers. The Wicked Masters ran a very strong combined time of 1:06:29. Congratulations guys!

Thank you to the following Wicked Runners who volunteered, thus making life a little easier for all the participants who ran: Dan Sullivan, Julie Arrison, Liz Touchette and Deb Touchette.

Results:

8. Wicked Masters (1st in Mens Masters Division) 1:06:29

Patrick Smith, TR Ramsdell, Colin Maclay and Joyn Ayers

30. Wicked Wild (AKA Wicked Coed #1) 1:15:30

Sarah Coffey, Mark Ponikvar, Rachel Hunt and Tim Short

41. Wicked Sassy (AKA Wicked Coed #2, but with all females?) 1:22:49

Alison Phelan, Bethany Hyde Radabaugh(ran two legs!) and Dawn Cobak

47. Wicked Men 1:26:09

Colin Doherty, Kenny Hewson, Peter Raymond and Frank Lanzillo

54. Wicked Mixed Up (AKA Wicked Coed #4) 1:28:28

Bill Morse, Amber Wolfenden, Chris Burrbridge and Steve Touchette

Check out the start of the relay in this quick video:

In our on going efforts to be close with the BAA (and someday qualify to get club numbers for the Boston Marathon), we are gathering a group to volunteer for the BAA Half Marathon on Sunday, October 10, 2010.

We need volunteers to sign up sooner rather than later so the BAA can count on us. If there are any questions please email John Mahoney.

The BAA has asked us to be their “Course Monitors.” The description for this job is:

Course Monitors
Team Captain: Josh Nemzer
Check-in Time: 6:30 a.m. – Noon
Course Monitors will be relied upon to provide the runners with both direction, as well as safety along the course. Course Monitors will meet at Playstead Park and be dispatched from there via bus. They should remain at their location until picked up again by bus.

I hope you will join us to help with this event. Feel free to ask your friends and family if they want to join us too. We will be happy to include them.

Here are the instructions for the BAA online volunteering – be sure to ask me if you have any questions. (If you do volunteer, be sure to send me your “online application confirmation number!”)

1)
Go to:
http://www.baa.org/Volunteering/HalfVolunteer.asp

2)
Select the “APPLY ONLINE” link.

3)
If you have volunteered for the BAA in the past, enter your volunteer ID. If you do not remember your ID, there is a link to have the BAA find it for you.

If you have not volunteered with the BAA before, you will have to enter your contact information.

Whatever you do, get your info entered.

4)
At the “Volunteer Registration” page, select
“Join: I want to join an existing Volunteer Group.”

5)
From the drop down menu, select the group: Wicked Running Club
The password is: go_wicked

6)
I suspect most of you will have no special requests at the “ADDITIONAL INFORMATION” page and can just click “next.”

7)
Check the box to acknowlwdge that you accept the terms in the “VOLUNTEER’S AGREEMENT, WAIVER, RELEASE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT” and click “next” again.
Review your “PERSONAL INFORMATION” entries. If there are errors, click the “modify entries” link. Otherwise click the “submit as shown” link.

9)
You should soon receive an email from the BAA that gives you your “Volunteer Application Confirmation.” Please either forward this email to me or send me your “online application confirmation number.” I will need this to keep track of who is volunteering in our group and to coordinate race day efforts.

The Wicked Running Club held its annual Wicked Summer Outing Party at Camp Naumkeag over this past weekend. The event means much more to the Club than just a chance to have hot dogs and cold beers. It’s a chance to honor those who have been selected to receive the Wicked Frosty Four Scholarship. For 2010, there were 10 amazing applicants, and the Scholarship Committee had a difficult time picking the four who who recieve the award as all of the applicants are standout Student-Athletes.

Congratulations to Susannah Barnes, Alfred Rossi, Kristy Henrich and Michael Nickerson for being selected at this year’s recipents of the Wicked Frosty Four Scholarship! Along with the $1000.00, each recipient also received the first Wicked Frosty Four technical shirt and a one year membership to the Wicked Running Club.

A big thank you to Shannon O’Donnell for organizing the event. Peter Raymond was excellent on the grill serving up tasty hot dogs and hamburgers.
Wicked Wellness

You could make a case that the Wicked Running Club is one wicked wellness-oriented club. Several weeks ago, the club participated in the Town of Salem’s Health and Wellness Week by sponsoring a Friday Night at the Movies spectacular that featured two films, Fire on the Track, a documentary about Steve Prefontaine, and Spirit of the Marathon Movie, and then followed the movies with a Saturday morning group run. But the club just doesn’t got to the movies for wellness. During July the club hosts its second annual Wicked Kidz Races, a series of half-mile and one-mile races for kidz six to 14 years of age and will, thanks to the financial success of the club’s New Year’s Day Frosty Four race in January, offer four $1000.00 college scholarships which will be awarded to students based on a combination of academic achievement, contributions to their team, volunteer/community work and quality of application and essay. Preference will be given to residents of Wicked Running Club member towns. Would you expect anything less impressive from a club that features “Miles” the Wicked Cat as its official mascot?

Led by Captain TR Ramdell, the Wicked Wildcats beat the Wicked Whoopass Wiffleballers by a score of 8-7 in the 1st Annual Wicked Wiffleball Throwdown held at Salem Willows. The event which was organized by Nicole Short was up for grabs right until the final at bat for the Whoopass Wiffleballers. But in the end the pitching staff for the Wicked Wildcats held back some late game herorics and claimed victory.

While each inning had thrilling moments, it was the cook out after the game was finished that was pretty amazing. With hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta salad, soda and enough chips and cookies to sink a ship, the event was a complete success. Frank Lanzillo of the Whoopass Wifferballers was quoted on Facebook giving his thumbs up to the event organizer, ”Thanks so much Nicole. great idea, even better planning, even better execution.” Sounds like there will be calls for Nicole to organize the 2nd Annual Wicked Wiffle Ball Throwdown next year! Maybe we can get Jerry Remy and Announcer Boy (A.K.A Dan Orsillo) from NESN to call the game next year, how crazy would that be!?!?

Photos from the game can be viewed at facebook.com. The great shots were taken by Giff Campbell, thanks Giff!

Talk about an amazing morning at Forest River Park! The 2nd Annual Wicked Kidz Race took place this past Saturday, July 17 with amazing performances by the 85 kids that participated. Even though the sun was beating down on the kids, everyone pushed and gave it their all in either the half mile race or mile race.

Once again, Salem Park & Rec Department and the Wicked Running Club teamed up to put on a great event that really resembled an actual road race and not just a kids race. All participants received a finishers ribbon at the finish line, but the overall male and female winner of each race got a very nice trophy, while the top three in each age group got medals. There was even a temporary tattoo station featuring the Wicked Kidz race logo!

Coming back for a second year as the main sponsor was Chic-fil-A of Peabody. They brought tasty chicken nuggets and of course the awesome Chic-fil-A Cow! Kids were also treated to fruit, Pirates Bounty popcorn, Gatorade and water.

Taking the helm as Race Director again was Doug Bollen who had plenty of volunteers on hand from the Wicked Running Club to make sure the race was well organized thus ensuring all the kids would have a blast!

With the great success of the first two Wicked Kidz Races, it’s safe to say that Salem Park & Rec along with the Wicked Running Club will be hosting the 3rd Annual Wicked Kidz Race in July of 2011.
