G.A.C. Mother's Day Run for Breast Cancer

By Sheri Hewson

Mother’s Day, trail run, food and friends . . . . does it get any better than that?  The G.A.C. hosts a six hour Mother’s Day Run each year on Mother’s Day for breast cancer at Bradley Palmer Park.  The course is a three mile loop that you run as often as you would like.  No, you do not have to run for six hours – that is just the time frame for the beginning and the end because yes, Virginia, some people do run for the entire six hours.

For a couple years now my friend Lori has suggested I should do this trail run and I have politely declined as I was extremely intimidated by the time frame and have never done a trail run.  Well, last year I decided to “suck it up” and do it.  I finished my first loop and came to the aid station for a drink – I was in heaven when I saw the amount of food on that table.  You name it and it was there.  I did four loops that day and went home, happy, tired, full and in love with trail running.

This year I brought my friend Cindy along and we joined Stephanie and Dan Cooper, Bill Morse, Jay Curry and Alison Phelan.  Well, let’s put “joined” into perspective . . . . I saw them at the beginning, chatted with them and said hello as we passed on the trail!  Like last year it was a gorgeous day and it was great to see so many people running and walking for a great cause.  As with last year there was food, food and more food which you know makes me incredibly happy – makes me almost want to train for an ultra if this is the way they eat!  I did four loops again this year, Steph and Alison did five and I believe Dan, Bill and Jay did six.  As if the trail running was not enough, “the guys” also helped a family that tipped in their canoe – yeah, you will have to ask them about that . . . .

This is a great run for a great cause with great people.  I encourage everyone to mark their calendars for Mother’s Day 2010 and join in the fun!
