5 Wicked club members, and 1 friend, ran the Eastern States 20 mile Race this past Sunday.

The race was an all day event, the group left Salem at 7:30 and returned around 4. The logistics were the time consuming part. The drove to New Hampshire and parked, took a bus to Massachusetts where they chilled for a couple of hours in a gymnasium–okay, most went back and forth on what to wear, snacked (yeah for cookies), packed gear, and made frequent bathroom trips. Here is the group waiting, and well, keeping their minds off the 20 miles in the rain upon us:) From left to right: Bruce Campbell, Billy Shae, Karen Giroux, Sharon Tassel, Anne McDonough-Hughes (Melissa’s friend), and Melissa Jaynes.

The race started at 11. This is the Eastern States race because it takes you along the coast (almost all is on the coast) from Kittery, Maine to Salisbury, Massachusetts along route 1A in New Hampshire (aka Ocean Blvd). Here is a sample of some of the scenery and the lovely weather the group endured/enjoyed. Bruce swears it was great weather, and he should know he has run the race 12 of the last 14 years.

For many runners, this was a training run for Boston, but Melissa and Anne had different plans, their purpose of the race was to actually try and race the 20 miles and see what marathon pace would look like–oh, and Melissa had never run 20 miles let alone raced it. IT WORKED!! Melissa and Anne started around 9:50 for three miles, picked up to 9:40 for a couple more, and then then coasted for about 5 on 9:20s before pushing the 9:15s and under. They even came under 9:00 for two of the miles! The ladies did a great job of keeping themselves in check with the pace (“not too fast now ladies, you have hours ahead of you. . .”) and really enjoyed the race. This is quite an accomplishment–especially with pools in their shoes starting at mile 2 (yes, 10% in and everyone was soaked–except maybe the guy in the trash bag).

Melissa specifically would like to thank Wicked runners.  She says:  I have to give a shout out to my running club–these New Englanders have overwhelmed me with their support. I received e-mails and Facebook page messages before the race and tons after! Billy Shae even greeted her at the finish (and he was absolutely freezing) with a much needed hug at the end of the race–ok, I might have looked like I needed a little support standing as my legs were on auto pilot. You would think I already ran the marathon. This has me even more psyched for the marathon and I just can’t wait.

Boston Marathon .  . .in three bites.   3rd Bite

As previously announced we are coordinating the running of the Boston Marathon course over three different days this winter / spring season.

Our last run with be Saturday, April 11th.  Leaving from my office @ Waters & Brown – 281 Derby Street, Salem (parking lot in the rear) @ 10:00 am.  We will drive into Newton and run the last 8 or 9 miles (Newton -Wellesley Hospital though the big hills and to the finish) of the Marathon route.  Typically we drop a car at our finish destination and all pile into another car to drive the beginning and reverse the process at the end (we’ll use more cars as required). We should be back in Salem in the 2:30 – 3:00 range.

Let me (timfclarke@aol.com) know if you’d like to join us, your cell # and whether you’d be willing to drive.

Your Wicked Tour Guide,

Tim Clarke
